How to Prepare Your Team to Be On Camera

The most common thing we hear before a shoot in Northwest Arkansas is some version of I am terrible on camera. Almost nobody is, once they are set up to succeed. Here is how we prepare teams, and how you can prepare yours, so shoot day feels easy and the footage feels like you.

Tell people why, not just when. An email that says video crew coming Tuesday creates dread. A note that says we are filming a short video so new customers can meet the team before they call creates buy in. People perform better when they understand the purpose and know nobody expects a performance.

Talking points beat scripts. Give each person two or three ideas to cover, not lines to memorize. Memorized lines produce stiff delivery and blank moments. In a good interview setup the person just answers questions in their own words, and the editor shapes the story afterward. The interviewer’s job is to make it a conversation, and a good one will get things out of your team that surprise you.

Dress normal, skip the noise. Solid colors film better than fine patterns, and people should wear what they would actually wear at work. Authenticity reads on camera. The crew handles the technical side: lighting, framing, and clean audio are their problem, not your team’s.

Schedule for energy. Put on camera time in the morning when people are fresh, block fifteen to twenty minutes per person, and never make someone film during their lunch. A relaxed schedule is the cheapest production upgrade there is.

Normalize the retake. The single most freeing thing to tell your team: this is not live. Anyone can stop, laugh, and start over, and only the best take survives. Once people internalize that, nerves drop fast.
